The objectives of the event on “Illegal Wildlife Trade in Latin America and the Caribbean: impacts on local communities and opportunities for legal and sustainable use” are to:
- Allow community voices to raise awareness on the impacts of illegal wildlife trade on local communities
- Understand the role that sustainable use strategies for subsistence or legal wildlife trade can play as part of the strategy to reduce illegal wildlife trade
- Showcase examples of sustainable use strategies that have proved to contribute to human well-being and reduce illegal wildlife trade in Latin America and the Caribbean.
- Discuss the enabling conditions for strategies aiming at reducing illegal wildlife trade to contribute to local livelihoods and human wellbeing, while reducing biodiversity loss and environmental degradation.
- Agree on a set of priority recommendations for the Illegal Wildlife Trade Conference to participate in Declaration “Community Voices” and a Side Event.
